With seconds to spare Matt Davis passes to Cameron Cunningham for the winning goal.
The Hawks defeated the Junior Steelheads this morning with a literal buzzer beating goal ending the tournament undefeated and Peewee "A" division Idaho State Champions for 2009-10.
This is the first Idaho State championship that the Treasure Valley Amateur Hockey Association Hawks have won, a huge accomplishment considering that this is the first year TVAHA has been as a full fledged hockey association.
The kids were excited, as were the coaches and parents. Another round of tailgating ensued with breakfast burritos, hot dogs, sausages and of course a cake.
Thanks for the great time guys and keep up the hard work. We are all looking forward to our final tournament in Jackson Hole at the end of March.
Goals: Davis & Cunningham
Penalties: Cunningham, Andreason, Ingraham, Plumlee.
The Hawkes came into being to fill a niche in the youth travel hockey programs. The concept was and still is to provide the chance to play travel hockey, regardless of skill level, to as many kids as are interested. Paramount to providing that opportunity is keeping the program affordable. So, since its inception the Hawks coaches and organizers are all volunteers, giving their time and treasure purely for the enjoyment of the kids.
In the first season the Hawkes were a squirt level, independent team composed of 14 players and a lot of heart. Our kids and parents logged a lot of miles traveling to McCall, Salmon and Salt Lake City, Utah. Players and parents formed friendships and learned to enjoy the challenges that travel hockey brings.
Expansion was the word for year number two. Our jerseys changed color to green and gold and our name was shortened by one letter to Hawks. The organization, playing under the McCall Youth Hockey banner, put four teams on the ice. One Squirt, a Peewee A, a Peewee B and a Bantam team. One of our proudest achievements that year was to send teams to the Idaho Amateur Hockey Association State Tournament.
2009-2010 is the the third season and the Hawks have a new parent organization, the Treasure Valley Amateur Hockey Association. After playing out our probationary period under the McCall banner for a year, the TVAHA has been able to add more ice time, more teams and more kids. The Hawks have nearly 60 kids spread over 5 age divisions. Once again Hawks teams will be playing in the State Amateur Hockey Tournament February 19-21 at Idaho Ice World in Boise, Idaho. Come out and cheer on the players.
